Originally from St. Cloud, Minnesota, Rodger Heaton relocated to Fergus Falls in 2001 after spending his adolescent years in Ottertail, Minnesota. The move coincided with a flurry of activity for Mr. Heaton. In addition to his work as an Insurance Representative for Combined Insurance Company and American Income Life Insurance Company, Rodger Heaton attended Fergus Falls Community College in pursuit of a Bachelor’s Degree. While maintaining a full-time job and furthering education, Rodger Heaton also began to assist friends and family with tax preparation. While he considered the task a hobby, Mr. Heaton discovered a talent and passion for the work. His comfort and confidence in his tax code led him to a role with the national tax preparation firm Jackson Hewitt. For two years, he was a corporate trainer for the company and instructed employees on the proper methods to prepare and file tax returns. Mr. Heaton also managed an office in Barnesville, Minnesota, during his tenure with Jackson Hewitt.
In 2006, Mr. Heaton decided to establish Heaton Tax Accounting as a legal entity and advertise his services throughout the area. Within one year he had tripled the firm’s clients. He founded Heaton Tax Accounting in order to share his skills with clients in need of professional tax consultation and customers responded to the professional and personal service they received.
In 2008, Rodger Heaton made the decision to make his passion a full-time career. While offering his tax and financial expertise, he also enjoyed the entrepreneurial aspect of being a small business owner. Mr. Heaton places a great deal of importance on personal communication and working closely with his clients to provide the highest level of service possible.
In 2013, Mr. Heaton completed the highest accreditation granted by the Department of the Treasury. This accreditation is known as an Enrolled Agent. Although this accreditation is granted by the IRS, in no way does it imply engagement for or with the IRS. Mr. Heaton is working solely on your behalf. As an Enrolled Agent, Mr. Heaton demonstrates significat tax knowledge by passing a comprehensive test. He has been granted unresitricted rights to represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service, demonstrates special competencies in tax matters, adheres to ethical standards, and is required to stay current with tax law and regulations by completing a minimum amount of continuing education annually.
Also in 2013, Mr. Heaton completed his licensure as an Insurance Agent in the Life & Annuity and Health & Accident products. This licensure is granted by the Minnesota Department of Commerce.
Under his guidance, the firm has enjoyed numerous successes. In the eight year period, after the creation of Heaton Tax Accounting, the number of clients increased from 100 to 1300. This has been the result of aptitude, intuition, and hard work. Since solely focusing on his business, Rodger Heaton has taken over two local tax return businesses, upgraded the firm’s office, opened two satellite offices, and grown the staff to include three tax preparers, three office assistants, and one marketing assistant.
In his personal time, Rodger Heaton thoroughly enjoys spending time with his 14 year old daughter, Katlyn, and the rest of his family. An outgoing person, he takes pleasure in meeting new people and seeing them laugh as much as he does. He is an avid travel enthusiast and looks forward to discovering new cultures and locales.
